Marching Band Fundamentals

"New People" seek help from "Old People" if you can.

Attention (Drill Position) – Heels together, toes together, stomach in, shoulders over hips, weight slightly forward, head up, STAND TALL!

Parade Rest - LEFT foot out shoulder width, left hand in fist across diaphragm, right arm over left arm (straight fingers), one count movement

Mark Time (marching in place) – Toes remain stationary, heel up, stationary leg stays straight, back of the up-lifted knee to the front of the stationary knee (always start with the left foot!)

First Step (Glide Step) – Heel-Roll-Toe (toes up! And roll!) Left knee initiates the motion ½ count before down beat (and one)

Halt - Right foot ends cadence and left foot comes back to attention position (and one)

Backward March - TOE, TOE, TOE, keeping weight to the front (almost dragging the toe back (NO ROLL!)

Turns (Right, Left, Rear) – turns are slow – 4 counts, 90 degrees; 2 counts, 45 degrees; 8 counts for rear turn to the LEFT – 180 degrees

Flanks (right, left, to the rear march) – flanks are fast – immediate motion in the new direction (while in motion)

Flips (right, left, rear) – from a stand still – a form of step-off in a new direction from attention

Adjusted step - 8 steps to 5 yds. (22.5 in.), 6 to 5 (30 in.), 16 to 5 (11.25 in), 4 to 5 (45 in)

Oblique - marching 45 degrees to the line

Slide - facing one direction while marching another
