This is a new competition in its first year of operation. According to Director Charles Pennington, the competition was organized by North Texas Band Directors looking for an alternative marching festival for the non-state years. (In 1990, U.I.L. changed its marching competition format and began alternating the State Championship between 4A and 5A bands, making us eligible for the state competition only every other year.) The goal of the Band Directors was to establish a great competition, with great judges, high integrity, and a more traditional UIL type format with an emphasis on music and marching.
Twenty-two 5A marching groups from across the state, all of which have long histories of 1st Division Superior Ratings at their respective U.I.L. Region Marching Contests and frequent invitations to and outstanding performances at at the U.I.L. State Marching Contest have registered to compete. The judging will use the U.I.L. format of five judges, three over music and two over marching. Band Directors had the opportunity to submit names for consideration as possible judges. Mr. Pennington notes that, "Those who were chosen are considered to be experts in the field with many years of experience and a reputation of high integrity."
After all of the groups have performed, they will be ranked. The top ten will advance to the finals and perform a second time. The finalists will be ranked a second time. Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place. Each band who makes it to the finals will receive a Finalist plaque.
